9/11 - 12 Years Later

Do you remember where you were when you heard the news of the terrorist attacks?  Do you remember what you thought, how you felt?

I remember a country devastated, yet resolved to stand strong.  I remember a country that called upon God for help, for mercy, for healing.  Sadly, I wonder how many have forgotten?

On this day of remembrance, Psalm 11 seems appropriate to share with you.

I trust in the Lord for protection.
So why do you say to me,
“Fly like a bird to the mountains for safety!
The wicked are stringing their bows
and fitting their arrows on the bowstrings.
They shoot from the shadows
at those whose hearts are right.
The foundations of law and order have collapsed.
    What can the righteous do?”

But the Lord is in his holy Temple;
the Lord still rules from heaven.
He watches everyone closely,
    examining every person on earth.
The Lord examines both the righteous and the wicked.
He hates those who love violence.
He will rain down blazing coals and burning sulfur on the wicked,
    punishing them with scorching winds.
For the righteous Lord loves justice.
The virtuous will see his face.

What about you?  Do you trust in Yahweh -- the Creator of all that is -- for your protection?  I'm not talking about the kind of trust that you have in your car starting on a cold wintry night, or the kind of trust that when you flick a switch the lights turn on.

What I'm referring to is the kind of trust that a scuba diver has in his breathing equipment when he's 300 feet below the surface.  I'm talking about the kind of trust a warrior has in his weapon in a fire-fight.  I'm speaking of the kind of trust a pilot has that her engines will not fail during ascent to 30,000 feet.  That kind of trust thinks, "If this fails me, I'm in big trouble."

Do you feel that way about Almighty God?  Do you trust Him enough to recognize that if He were to remove His gracious hand from your life that you would be utterly doomed?

While the chaos of that fateful day on 9/11/01 reverberates in our minds like they occurred just yesterday, and while it may stir up feelings of despair and anger and pain, fear not!  The Lord God Almighty STILL rules from heaven.  He is sovereign.  Nothing catches him by surprise.

While we may not understand why He allows suffering, those who place our complete trust in Him can sleep peacefully knowing that God is in control.  He is STILL in control.  He never lost it, not even on 9/11/01.

Will you place your trust in things?  in security?  in freedom? Or will you place it in the One who is the Father of love, joy, and peace? the One who rules from His heavenly throne? the One who says, "Be still, and know that I am God."?  If the former is the case, you have great reason to be concerned.  But if the latter, you have great peace and security available to you.

Will you finally call upon Yahweh today?
